“First, life casually tells you something, then it taps you on the shoulder, finally it shoves you to get your attention” – Emeroy Bernardo

This week we have my friend and professional breakdancer, dance teacher, and health coach Emeroy Bernardo on the show! I was super excited to talk to Emeroy, partly because of my own obsession with how cool breakdancing is, and partly because he has such a unique and interesting back story.

In this episode, we talk about the history of breakdancing and what it means to be a B-Boy, Emeroy’s approach to dance and health coaching, and later in the episode, we talk about how a low point opened his eyes and changed his life – powerful stuff. Enjoy this episode!

-How to breakdance! (Or at least how to learn quickly)

-Most of Emeroy’s dance skill is maintained through teaching, Emeroy improves his skills solo two days a week

-Why you should have multiple teachers. One of his is Bboy Machine (who was a hero of his growing up)

-What is Battle Of The Year ?- The Olympics of B-Boying

-How Emeroy learned to dance in his room from Usher and NSYNC videos, then performed in front of his family

– How he started dancing again after being called a faggot as a young dancer made him stop for four years – he thought “I’m never dancing again”

-How B-Boys can make money teaching dance outside of the US vs. the challenge of teaching at a dance studio.

-How to start with one thing until it becomes easy: Success by simplifying

-Tip for self-conscious dancers: If you close your eyes while dancing you will focus on what you are doing instead of what people think
